Vito Tanzi
Short biography:
Vito Tanzi is a former Professor and Chairman of the Economics Department,
American University, Washington D.C. He also served as Head of the
Tax Policy Division and later as Director of the Fiscal Affairs Department at
the IMF. From 1990-1994 he served as President of the International Institute
of Public Finance (IIPF). Since 2000 he has been active as a Senior
Associate, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; State Secretary for
Economy and Finance in the Italian Government; and a senior consultant to
the Inter-American Development Bank. He received many awards including
Honorary president of the IIPF and Honorary degrees from the University
of Cordoba (Argentina), the University of Liege (Belgium), the University of
Torino (Italy), the University of Lisbon (Portugal), and the University of Bari
(Italy). An economic effect (the Tanzi effect) named after him.
